Mental Disorders We Treat
We provide psychiatric services for a large number of mental health concerns, including:
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a very common mental health disorder. In most cases, signs of ADHD begin in childhood and persist throughout adulthood. ADHD can make it difficult to focus and complete tasks. Find out more about the condition, as well as how it is diagnosed and treated, on our ADHD testing page.
Anxiety can best be thought of as excessive or all-consuming fear and worry – especially about situations that pose no immediate threat. It is often accompanied by specific physical signs, such as rapid breathing, a quickened heart rate, and sudden sweating. Anxiety is extremely common, with nearly 20% of adults in the U.S. estimated to have some type of anxiety disorder.
A persistent depressed mood or sadness, along with a loss of interest in formerly enjoyable activities, are the hallmarks of depression. It negatively affects your thoughts, feelings, and actions – and can interfere with your ability to carry out daily tasks and significantly reduce your quality of life. Depression is a serious problem and can disrupt all areas of life. Left untreated, depression can threaten the health and safety of the depressed person as well as others.
“Gender identity” is your personal sense of which gender you are. You could identify with the sex assigned to you at birth – e.g., male or female – or you may identify as a gender different from what you were born with. Psychological problems may arise when your gender identity conflicts with how others see you.
Almost everyone experiences difficulty sleeping at some point in their lives. When sleep disorders, such as problems falling asleep or staying asleep, become chronic, it can negatively impact your health. Causes of insomnia and other sleep disorders may be physical and/or psychological.
Being able to control your emotions is important if you want to function in the world and maintain relationships with others. There are a number of strategies and skills that you can learn and adopt in order to regulate your emotions. In many cases, as with bipolar disorders, medication is a critical first step in mood regulation.
Phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are types of anxiety disorders.
Phobias are persistent, excessive fears of something that is avoidable or poses no current threat. Common phobias include:
- Fear of heights (acrophobia)
- Fear of public places (agoraphobia)
- Fear of small, contained spaces (claustrophobia)
- Fear of social interactions with others (social phobia)
- Fear of flying (aerophobia) or driving (vehophobia)
OCD involves a combination of recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions), and associated behaviors (compulsions). For example, a person with OCD may fear disease and contamination, resulting in frequent hand-washing, to an extent that the skin becomes tender. It may also involve a fear of losing control by acting on undesirable impulses, such as the urge to swear or become violent.
The way in which you perceive and value yourself is considered your self-esteem. Often, self-esteem is rooted in early, erroneous impressions – which can be difficult (but not impossible) to change. Poor self-esteem can be based on any number of personal attributes, including your body shape or size. Self-esteem plays a role in almost everything you do. Identifying and addressing self-esteem issues can improve satisfaction in your relationships, work, and other areas of your life.
Stress is your reaction to any demand or tension, whether that demand or tension is positive or negative in nature. Stress takes an emotional and physical toll on the body. Repeated, unrelieved stress can leave you anxious and angry. It can increase blood pressure and upset your stomach. Understanding your reaction to stress – and identifying healthy tools and strategies to cope with stress – can help you manage it and improve your emotional and physical well-being.
Trauma is any unpleasant experience that leaves you feeling unsafe or helpless. Your emotional response to trauma can cause harm, psychologically and physically, and can cause significant disruptions in all areas of your life.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is when you experience persistent, recurring negative reactions to trauma for some time after the event itself. These reactions may appear as sudden and unwanted flashbacks about the event, accompanied by physical reactions (your body may react as if the previous threat were present again). Understanding and processing the trauma at the heart of PTSD is necessary in order to heal and move forward with your life.
Please note that at Denver Wellness Associates, we do NOT treat patients with substance abuse disorders, major mental illness, or those seeking pain management services.
